BIOGRAPHY

Currently serving as the Founder and Director of the private, Baltimore-based non-profit Center for Medical Technology Policy (CMTP), Dr. Sean Tunis is widely experienced in health care policy creation and analysis. Specializing in the fields of comparative effectiveness research, evidence-based medicine, and clinical research, Dr. Sean Tunis established CMTP to help facilitate the growth of promising medical technology by improving practical research techniques. To this end, Dr. Sean Tunis works directly with physicians, patients, researchers, manufacturers, and all other health care decision makers to generate a consensus approach to medical research initiatives. Prior to establishing CMTP, Dr. Sean Tunis played a critically important role in shaping American health care policy as the Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In this position for five years, Dr. Sean Tunis was responsible for analyzing the Medicare and Medicaid programs for quality and clinical standards, developing new policy in conjunction with the CMS Administrator as the senior advisor of clinical and scientific policy, and implementing the Quality Improvement Organization program. Before joining CMS, Dr. Sean Tunis held additional positions in public policy through the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment and the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources. A board-certified specialist in internal medicine, Dr. Sean Tunis earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. For his post-doctoral residency, Dr. Sean Tunis practiced both internal medicine and emergency care medicine at UCLA and the University of Maryland. In addition to his M.D., Dr. Sean Tunis earned a Master's degree in Health Services Research and a Bachelor's degree in Biology and History of Science. Dr. Sean Tunis currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland. Outside of his work with the Center for Medical Technology Policy, Dr. Tunis also maintains membership in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), where he is an AAAS Science and Technology Fellow.

As Director, Sean leads CMTP, defines its direction and priorities, raises funding for the Center and projects within the Center, is an invited speaker on panels about comparative effectives, pragmatic trials, and related topics. From a consortium of payers, manufacturers and foundations, Sean gained funding to make the Center operational.
